Italy's populists expect more from the EU than from the Marshall Plan
The fund agreed by the EU authorities to restore the economies of EU member states affected by coronavirus is more important than the Marshall Plan, said on Wednesday, September 23, one of the leaders of the Italian populist 5 Star Movement (part of the ruling coalition), Foreign Minister Luigi Di Mayo. The country's authorities should make the most of this mechanism of obtaining support, since this train will no longer come, this is the only opportunity to modernize our country, Di Maio said. The EU authorities will begin to accept applications for credit and non-refundable funds from member states in October 2020, but by this time the Italian government intends to agree only on the general concept of spending these funds (it is assumed that Italy can count on 200 billion euros), and postpone the specifics of the projects by the beginning of 2021.
