In the United States, 1.48 million citizens applied for unemployment benefits over the week

The number of initial applications for unemployment benefits over the past week amounted to 1.48 million in the United States. This is evidenced on June 25 by data published by the Ministry of Labor. According to the agency, for the fourteenth week since the beginning of the pandemic (from June 14 to 20), applications for benefits were registered 60 thousand less than in the previous week. From June 1 to 6, 1.56 million Americans applied for benefits, and from June 7 to 13, the number of applications for unemployment benefits amounted to 1.54 million. Thus, in the country there is a general trend towards a decrease in applications for benefits. It is noted that this may be due to the relaxation of the restrictions imposed in connection with the coronavirus epidemic, which allowed a number of enterprises to resume work. The peak of applications for unemployment benefits occurred at the end of March, when primary applications came from 6.9 million people. Before taking measures to combat the spread of coronavirus in the United States, only a few hundred thousand citizens of the country applied for unemployment benefits weekly. Every year, the number of jobs in the United States increased by several million. According to The Washington Post, the pandemic nullified the economic successes of the past few years and created the threat of a crisis that could rival the times of the Great Depression (1929, 1939). Earlier, the news agency reported an increase in the number of unemployed in the United States by 1.5 million people.
